So you see the Course title and think “Oh, no… a canned and dry history course”. ABSOLUTELY NOT! This 12-week independent study course is all about finding a focus for your new work in textile art.
Do you love the BORO Textiles created from found materials in Japan at the start of the 20th Century? The hugely diverse and colourful Indonesian hand stitched embroideries and woven foundation cloth? Have you studied the textile history of the countries your family originated from before immigrating to Canada? The world of textile is rich in history and this course will take you on a bit of a world tour decided by the student body as they join in at class each week. A 12 week world tour as we share personal ties to textiles we love and play with many diverse techniques in class! And, a “stash busting” opportunity for you.

Yes, there will be one great project required from each student! Your choice… and lots of experimentation with colouring cloth, threads and developing a modern take on laying stitch to cloth. Plan to be a part of the classroom fun, making new friends as you join our community of lovers of all things CLOTH! Keeping busy as the summer of 2014 passes... minor stumbling blocks in the way!
Belonging to a Fibre Arts Group can be an amazing and fulfilling experience for a textile and stitching enthusiast. I happen to be lucky enough to belong to five... The Kingston Fibre Artists Group since 1996, CONNECTIONS Fibre Artists Group since the fall of 2013 and SAQA (Studio Art Quilts Associates) since 2005. I am also a member of the Cataraqui Guild of Needle Arts and The Ontario Network of Needleworkers... though less active in both this past year for many reasons including commitments to the first three mentioned here.
Each group has it's own special style and as SAQA is an International Association, being an active member is solely up to each individual. I chose to volunteer as a Regional Representative for the Central Canada Region in 2011. This job has been both exciting and a challenge, as I have had to learn MUCH about managing the Blog Administrator's role for our Region. The best part of the role is the contact I have with all of the multi-talented Artist members in our Ontario and Quebec Region. It is joy to be able to provide support and encouragement to the members as they develop their own place in the art world.
Newly retired this past fall, I have had a minuscule amount of newly free time to create art and am still hopeful that the rest of the year affords opportunities for creating more pieces for my body of work. I recently had an accident at home resulting in a fractured wrist, and that is a set back I could have lived without as I so looked forward to gardening, lots of travel and creative workshops this summer.
I am certainly blessed to have great acquaintances and contacts to support my artistic needs, and some have been really helpful as I work though this latest setback. I am heading to a great Workshop Series at QUILTING BY THE LAKE at Onondaga College near Syracuse next week, and will be studying with the renowned TERRY JARRARD DIAMOND in her week long workshop "LINE AS LANGUAGE".
If all goes well, my Surface Design and Stitch course will run at St. Lawrence College July 21-25, 2014. So looking forward to sharing time with new and returning students.
In August I travel to the AQS Show in Grand Rapids, Michigan and hope to see the two great SAQA Exhibitions at my Alma Mater, Michigan State University where there are two Galleries on campus hosting the SAQA Shows "Color Wheel of Emotions" and Earth Stories".
FIBREWORKS KINGSTON is a major focus for me as the summer moves to fall and the start of our 35th Series of Weekend Workshops. FIBREWORKS KINGSTON joins HERITAGE QUILTWORKS CANADA to bring you the best of the best Fibre Workshops in 2014/15
Greetings to all of the friends and visitors here at my blog. Hope your summer is going a bit better than mine... unexpected events and surprises happen. (Actually my injury is fine, allowing me time now to read, just enjoy my surroundings and share some quality visits with friends and family ...and slowly one-handed type announcements for this blog!)

The best part of summer is free time to work on the planning for our FIBREWORKS KINGSTON Series Workshops for 2014/15 and have the chance to network with the very best and most talented Instructors in Ontario and beyond as I plan for our next year together.
You will notice if you visit our Registration Pages at FIBREWORKS KINGSTON's blog that Fibreworks is now a division of my 10 year old textiles and workshops presentation business, HERITAGE QUILTWORKS CANADA.
For many years, FIBREWORKS was so beautifully presented by our mentor and dear friend, Hilary Scanlon. It was always my goal and commitment as I assisted Hilary as her Associate Coordinator from 1996-2008 to strive to continue her dream. Two years ago, Hilary retired and passed the candle for continuing Fibreworks to me... and with several friends and former associates of Hilary's, we tried a "committee approach" to working with the business of running Fibreworks. With everyone very busy with their own arts studies, groups and commitment to quality personal lives, it just seemed best that Fibreworks return to an owner operated business for Administrative purposes.
The original Fibreworks Kingston mission continues: "To promote fibre as an Art Form". Our Instructors are professional designers and well-known craftspersons who skillfully share their well-honed techniques and knowledge. Participants in FIBREWORKS Workshops are professional teachers, and interested craftspersons, or amateurs wishing to learn and share together for further stimulation and knowledge. I will always seek the very best of the best Instructors for our FW line-up, with the goal of staying in tune with our students' needs and wishes.
Fibreworks is a huge family - made up of students from now almost 35 years of enjoying together the opportunity to learn and grow together. I so hope you will join us once again this new season as Fibreworks Kingston merges with Heritage Quiltworks Canada to bring high quality, skills/knowledge based workshops not only those interested in art quilts and contemporary design, but to needle arts enthusiasts in many disciplines including traditional quilting, embroidery, felt work, painting and mixed media art work and more. Your suggestions are always welcome!
We will be enjoying workshops throughout the year, announced at the Fibreworks blog and in associated social media and newsletter ads with local Groups, Guilds and Associations. Keep a watchful eye as Heritage Quiltworks and Fibreworks Kingston grow to benefit our needle arts enthusiasts in Southeastern Ontario and beyond. SAQA Benefit Auction Art work readied for submission...

Participating in the donation of Forest Floor to the Benefit Auction for 2014 at Studio Art Quilt Associates. The call went out for 12 x 12 inch quilts early this spring, and I have always been on the "purchaser" side of the Annual Auction. This year, the importance of the donation is heightened, as fewer members are finding that they can donate a piece of art for the auction. My piece was ready and the deadline for submission was extended, so after lots of busy days over the past several weeks with FIBREWORKS commitments, I am sending off my piece to meet the deadline.
Each fall during the month of September, SAQA offers the donation quilts in an online Auction format. Some of the quilts (and mine does not qualify as it is mounted on a frame for hanging) are designated to travel to the International Quilt Festival in Houston to be shared during a live Auction. Some are chosen for inclusion in a permanent collection at the International Quilt Studies Centre at the University of Nebraska.
It is indeed a pleasure to see this small piece of art, with elements intended to deteriorate over time just as a forest floor in real time, travel to the SAQA Benefit Auction to support the important educational programs offered through the Association's Exhibition program. I encourage all members to consider the donation of a 12 x 12 piece of art before the June 15th deadline. The entry form is HERE .

CONNECTIONS FIBRE ARTISTS Group Exhibition Continues at Wellington County Museum and Archives in Fergus, ON through June 5th.....
The Wellington County Museum Gallery website offers all of the details about the dates and hours their upstairs Gallery is open to share this beautiful Exhibition. It is receiving wonderful reviews from arts enthusiast across Ontario and beyond. If you have the chance to get to the Guelph/Fergus area between now and June 5th, please do make your way to this amazing Museum. Everyone is welcome and do plan to take friends and family. The Museum offers something for everyone, including a great Exhibit of the Quilts of Renske Helsmuth running concurrently with our Exhibition.
Creating new work for Exhibitions in 2014 has been both challenging and really enjoyable, and adds some excitement to the days as spring is evolving. The two pieces below were worked during January and February 2014 specially for the CONNECTIONS FIBRE ARTISTS Exhibition.
My work shown below is part of my contribution to the show, and both were created with dyed fabrics and paints, using the inspiration of the Group of Seven artists as a guide for creating new and original work. The process was fun and the results, as always, surprising. You just never know until the fabric reveals itself after the process work is complete.
Working with thickened Procion MX dyes as the application medium for "Into The Bog" went amazingly well. I used Potato Dextrin and Soy Wax Batik techniques for laying in the base "roots" and added the background overcoat of full strength India Ink over the layered batik design with a foam paint roller for "Darkness, Pine Rack". Both processes were experiments that could ultimately result in my delight or leave me with fabrics that may or may not work in an art quilt application at all...I was lucky with these pieces.

I am so pleased to be able to share space in the exhibition with the 27 talented and well known artists of the CONNECTIONS FIBRE ARTISTS Group, and am humbled by the beauty and expertise demonstrated in their many varying individual works of art. As a new member of CONNECTIONS, I certainly am excited to have the opportunity to learn and grow through future meeting/workshop days, and under the tutelage and with the commitment of the members of the group to share skills and techniques. Each member is renowned for his/her art, and I have much to learn.
Plans are currently underway for exploring more opportunities to offer this exhibition to Galleries in Ontario that welcome fibre, and be able to share the work with residents across the province. We also hope to be able to develop our plans for another new Exhibition that could be ready to share in the next year. Each member brings his/her own perspective and talent to the exhibition floor, and it is so exciting to see the new work as it is revealed.

Hi Bethany,For more than 45 years, St. Lawrence College has offered 1000 Islands Summer School of the Arts, a series of art courses that allow you to explore your creative spirit in the heart of a spectacular, world-renowned tourist region. Courses range from two to five days in length and are specially designed to develop your creativity in a variety of artistic mediums. More than 30 exciting courses are available on our campuses in Brockville, Cornwall and Kingston in June, July and August.

Artist Residency in Texas was a purely wonderful experience in March... so many thanks to Karey Bresenhan and her team

It has been awhile since I have added a post, but for me, the past two months have been filled with wonder and adventure. First a trip to Texas and the the beautiful Ranch home of Karey Patterson Bresenhan, President, Quilts Inc., in La Grange, Texas for a 10 day Artists Residency, accompanied by Everton, ON Artist, Susan Johnson.
The Residency was made possible through the very generous gift of Mrs. Bresenhan to the Studio Art Quilt Associates and made available to a member who successfully supported the SAQA Membership Program in 2012/13. As an active Professional Member of SAQA, I have served for the past two years as a Regional Representative for Central Canada. Needless to say, I was blessed to have been able to choose this trip as an opportunity to represent SAQA as I honed my own art skills and shared the opportunity with friend and mentor, Susan Johnson.
What a wonderful rest and opportunity to explore many techniques and do some fabric painting using new brands and types of paints. Experimentation is a wonderful tool, and even though I was nursing a serious back/leg injury, the time in Texas had a profound affect on my design play.

Needless to say, the adventure was a fun-filled challenge each day, as the beauty of the out of doors was as much of a pull after a long, hard winter in Canada as the space and paints, markers and fabric inside.We were made very comfortable in a beautiful Guest House that provided a safe haven for rest and planning, great food and lots of time for comparing notes on next days projects.
The days were filled with laughter, planning, a few trials and errors and many success stories that lead to all new work after returning home. One thing I learned was to go with a plan, and to use materials you are familiar with and LOVE when you have ten days to create. Experimentation is meant for the privacy of your home studio. I did love what happened at Susan's tables however, which is a testament to her many long years as a professional textile artist.

The SAQA "People and Portraits" exhibition curated by Martha Seilman, SAQA Executive Director, was hung in the Museum while we were in La Grange, along with two additional galleries of beautiful contemporary and heritage quilts. The staff were amazing and the visitors we met on our visits to the Museum agree that this is a precious gift to Texas and all who visit. We met amazing staff members like Carol Montgomery who loves her role as a staff member at the Museum, and the fun of working with Mrs. Bresenhan and the team at the Houston Market and International Quilt Festival over many years.

So many thanks to Karey and Maurice Bresenhan for establishing the amazing gift of the Residency Program at their ranch for artists. And to Lucy Carr, Quilts Inc. Administrative Assistant who provided us so many tips before and during the trip; to Dora, our lovely Guest House hostess, to JR, the Ranch Manager and to each of the staff at The Texas Quilt Museum for welcoming us to Texas and La Grange. Many heartfelt thanks to my friend Susan Johnson and her husband Quentin for making the trip possible and for the amazing flight accommodation. The trip of a life time for sure...

This full week course in our Textile Design Program will prepare the
Program or general interest student to create their own original hand
coloured and stitched textile projects. The course is for anyone who has
ever wanted to step out of the box, leave the familiar and perhaps
traditional behind and create one of a kind quilts or embroidery while
learning the foundations of design, stitch, pattern development and
finishing of quilts, home décor, wearables or wall art. Students will
explore color, support their knowledge of design principles and build
all new work while spending time in the classroom divided between
working into a sketchbook with art and design techniques. Students will
experience hands on sampling for special effects on fabrics and the
planning and successful execution of original small quilts or stitched
fabrics using a wide variety of new techniques. Students are encouraged
to complete several small classroom projects which are stitched by hand
or machine, framed/bound and ready to enjoy. A material fee of $40.00 to
cover the cost of paints and dyes, some tools and fabrics/threads for
small class samples is payable to the instructor on the first day.

confidence to make independent decisions that will produce beautiful
art, whether quilts, embroidery and wearables that are strong in colour
and design. During our week together, you will dye, paint and develop
pattern on cloth and colour complementary threads to create your very
own compositions based study of the principles and elements of design at
the start of our week together. Dyeing, painting, shibori, monoprint,
Indigo play all included.
Plan
to emerge from this class with an exciting and original collection of
projects, many ideas for future projects and confidence in your ability
to design! Experience with colouring cloth is NOT required and the
design study is planned as serious PLAY. Students are encouraged to
complete several small classroom projects which are stitched by hand or
machine, framed/bound and exhibition ready. A material fee of $40.00 to
cover the cost of wax, paints and dyes, some tools and fabrics/threads
for small class samples is payable to the instructor on the first day.

The art of The Group Of Seven is the central theme of this exhibition.
The members of Connections Fibre Artists accepted the challenge to design and execute their own original art that reflects their individual research into the artists, the paintings and the styles of the Group of Seven.
Although Tom Thompson died before the group formed, he was the inspiration for, and has always been considered a part of, the formation of The Group Of Seven.
Each member of Connections Fibre Artists has approached this theme from her or his own way ~ either inspired by their own memories of the Canadian landscape, by an emotional response to a particular Group of Seven artist/painting, or by some of the techniques and colour palettes used by these iconic Canadian artists.
The result is an exciting and intriguing exhibition celebrating the approach that Tom Thompson, Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, J.E.H. MacDonald, F.A. Farley, Frank Johnston, Arthur Lismer and Franklin Carmichael took to develop an original Canadian art.

Connections Fibre Artists
The group was formed in 1999 by a small group of friends whose common bond was the love of stitching as an art form. Their focus was to promote awareness and enjoyment of fibre art through gallery shows.
Their mandate was ‘Experience, Experimentation, Expression’.
We combine our Experience with Experimentation to continue to develop and widen the boundaries of fibre art, creating original surfaces and Expressing our individual ideas and feelings in the process.
